CHIEF'S CORNER
IF YOU'VE READ MY BIO ON THE ASI WEB PAGE YOU'LL
NOTE THAT I'M A SCOUTMASTER FOR A BOY SCOUT TROOP
IN MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA, AND I MAY HAVE
MENTIONED THAT A TIME OR TWO IN THIS COLUMN AS WELL.

At the end of January our Council held our annual Winter
Games event. A day for Troops and Venturing Crews to
come together at our council camp and compete in Scout
skills such as first aid, orienteering, woods tool usage, fire
building, knot tying, and team building exercises. It was an
especially welcome event this year as most of the Troops
had been meeting virtually due to the pandemic. Now
we were able to see our fellow Scouts at a distance while
enjoying the great outdoors. For my Troop it was the first
time to meet in person since early November and it was
great to be able to enjoy the day with them.

In the afternoon, one of the events we had to complete in
our campsite was a log toss. Camp staff was supposed to
drop off a suitable log-think a much shorter version of
a caber a la Highland Games-but they hadn't made it to
our campsite yet. No matter,

in front of our site and began tossing the log for distance.
Soon, we'd gotten a very respectable distance and I went
downrange to mark it and wait for the next toss. One of
my older Scouts stepped up to the line and making sure
I was off the road a good eight feet I signaled to him to go
ahead and throw it. He did and as he released the log our
eyes met and then I looked up to confirm that the log was
in fact heading straight toward me. I didn't have time to
do anything other than turn and duck when BANG!...it hit
me square on my right shoulder blade, and the end of the
log caught the base of my skull and my face hit the forest
floor. Fortunately, I didn't go unconscious and my Scouts
were much quicker at jumping into action and performing
first aid than they had been earlier that day at the first aid
challenge station. I was woozy and decided that I was in no
shape to drive home after the event, so eventually another
staff member took me to my local ER for an evaluation and
the rest of the Troop went home.
After being examined at the hospital, I was given a
prescription and discharge paperwork. I texted my wife to
let her know that the CAT scan found nothing broken or
leaking in my skull-and according to my wife nothing in
there-and that I was ready to be picked up. I went home
and went to bed. The headache subsided after a couple of
days and I felt ready to get back to work. But at the end of
the day on Tuesday after the injury, I felt like somebody
was driving a railroad spike into my temple and decided to
