CHART CHALLENGE
Rocket Science or Space Race?

IF YOU'VE BEEN FLYING UP AND DOWN THE FLORIDA EAST COAST AND USING
THE JACKSONVILLE SECTIONAL CHART YOU COULD NOT HAVE MISSED THE
DARK-BLUE PIE-SHAPED AREA EXPANDING OVER THE COASTLINE EAST OF
ORLANDO, FLORIDA. This is a space operations area regulated by FAR 91.143-
Flight limitation in the proximity of space flight operations. The rule warns that
no one may operate any U.S. registered aircraft within areas designated by notam
for space flight operations, except when authorized by ATC-and for good reasons.
There is a cautionary note about flying rockets and falling debris during the times
that the area is active. The note further clarifies the active status is intermittent
and altitudes stretch from the surface into unlimited space.
Clinton-Sherman Airport
You may already realize that commercial space operations are growing by the
day. Those operations are finding homes at existing airports, some of which are
public-use, some private-use. In response to this recent and expected continued
growth of commercial space ops, the FAA has added space launch activity areas
to VFR navigation charts. And yes, the current 12 FAA-licensed spaceports and
other federal and private launch and reentry sites are represented on the charts
by rocket symbols-just like the one at the Cape Canaveral launch pads. You'll find
these spaceports in Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Oklahoma,
Texas, and Virginia.
Let's take a look at two examples. One is the spaceport at Clinton-Sherman Airport
(KCSM) in Burns Flat, Oklahoma; the other is the recently added spaceport at
