CHIEF'S CORNER
I WAS IN A MEETING RECENTLY WHERE THE DISCUSSION TURNED TO
AIRSPACE PILOT DEVIATIONS, SPECIFICALLY PRESIDENTIAL TFR BUSTS.
Now you'd think that we've been dealing with these TFRs for quite some
time and should be clued in to the fact that we need to check for NOTAMs
and TFRs diligently before taking off and continue to monitor them during
flight. I suspect many of us do just that, but in my neck of the woods here
in the mid-Atlantic, a change in Oval Office occupancy shifted the impact
from Florida and New Jersey to Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
So now we're going through the growing pains of where the new TFRs
will be for President Biden. He is close to home, or homes, and a TFR in
Wilmington or Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, can pop up pretty quickly, be
modified just as quickly, and then be done with. Also, he's spending more
time than his predecessor at Camp David, which leads to the temporary
expansion of P-40 and squeezes us here at Frederick Municipal Airport
(KFDK) in Maryland.
Local DPE's that were part of the conversation indicated that during
checkrides they really drill down on special use airspace, the need to
check TFRs, and the requirements of FAR 91.161, which requires special
awareness training on the Washington DC Special Flight Rules Area
(SFRA) for pilots who fly VFR within a 60-nm radius of the DCA VOR/
DME. There's an easy-to-access course on FAASafety.gov and a nice
little certificate that goes along with that to put in your logbook or other
recordkeeping system. The FAA updates it from time to time, and while it's
currently a once-and-done training, it doesn't hurt to go back and review it
occasionally as part of your personal proficiency program.

Can you fly through special-use airspace? Do you need an ATC
clearance to enter a terminal radar service area? Alas, there are
no signs in the sky for guidance. So, here's a great refresher that
you can share with your students. This course offers a practical
approach to tackle airspace regulations and stay out of trouble
when flying from point A to point B. Know Before You Go will help
your students prepare to navigate basic up to the most complex
airspace in the National Airspace System.
