THIRD-CLASS MEDICAL REFORM, ALSO KNOWN
AS BASICMED, HAS REACHED ITS FOUR-YEAR
ANNIVERSARY WITH MORE THAN 61,000
PILOTS-INCLUDING CFIS AND THEIR CLIENTS-
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF BASICMED. The
anniversary also means that pilots who began
flying under BasicMed four years ago need to
review some important dates and steps related
to their 48-month renewal.
For example, I fly under BasicMed, and I will
need to schedule a visit with my physician later
this fall-before 48 months to the date of my
BasicMed exam four years ago. (I've set calendar
reminders to be sure to make my appointment
well ahead of time.) After seeing my physician
for the BasicMed exam, I'll take the course,
(and hopefully) pass the quiz, and submit my
completed Comprehensive Medical Examination
Checklist (CMEC) information at the end of
the course. AOPA will take it from there and
electronically submit my course completion and
CMEC form to the FAA. Easy peasy!
PLEASE SHARE
CFIs, you have a tremendous opportunity to help
your clients understand the BasicMed process-
what to expect, and how to be legal to fly under
BasicMed. So, I'd like to ask you to please share
this article with your clients who may wish to fly
under BasicMed or are already part of it and may
need to renew.
RENEWAL CYCLES
Okay, so let's break down the various points of
renewal cycles (24 and 48 months) and what
pilots who wish to begin flying under BasicMed
need to do. Other items in this discussion
also briefly touch on how to deal with special
issuance requirements and what avenues are
available to those who currently disqualify to fly
under BasicMed.
BUT FIRST THE FINE PRINT!
If you're like me, you may not always read the
fine print depending on what it's for. However, in
the case of BasicMed the fine print is critical for
you to read so you know what is required when

you renew or join BasicMed. I'd like to alert you
to these four basic requirements that will keep
you flying on the legal side of the law:
* You must hold a current and valid U.S. driver's
license and comply with all of its medical
requirements or restrictions.
* You must undergo a comprehensive
medical examination and have a BasicMed
Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist
(CMEC) completed by a state-licensed
physician (every 48 months to the day).
* You must take an FAA approved online
BasicMed medical education course and receive
a completion certificate (every 24 months to the
end of the month).
* You must keep these documents with your
logbook or in electronic format to be made
available upon request to the FAA.
Now that we've got that out of the way, let's go to
the next step.
