need to know and do.

BasicMed Course
The Medical Self-Assessment: A Pilot's Guide to Flying
Healthy course suggests getting a medical checkup
regularly to monitor your health and discuss and address
any health changes and concerns with your physician. Even
if you are not flying under BasicMed, you might like to
review the course periodically-it offers valuable advice on
how to stay healthy, how to detect signs of adverse medical
conditions, and what to do should you discover a situation
that requires medical attention. While not a replacement
for professional medical advice from your physician, you'll
be able to review matter-of-fact material to help you
objectively assess your condition to fly. The course is free to
all pilots, no AOPA membership required.
First, confirm that your most recent FAA-issued
medical was valid after July 14, 2006. This
gets a bit interesting because in 2008, the FAA
extended the validity period of medicals for
pilots under 40. So, use these guidelines to make
the calculation simple:
* If you were age 40 or over on the date of your
FAA examination you meet the requirement if
your examination was on or after July 15, 2004.
* If you were under age 40 on the date of your
FAA examination you meet the requirement if
your examination was on or after July 15, 2003.
Once you've determined you meet the
requirement, the process is quite simple. All you
need to do now is download the Comprehensive
Medical Examination Checklist (CMEC), fill
out your portion of the form, and make an
appointment with your state-licensed physician.
Then, visit your physician with your CMEC
form in hand and have your physician conduct
a BasicMed-specific exam and fill out the
physician's portion of the CMEC form. Note, if
your physician is new to BasicMed exams, share
AOPA's BasicMed Pilot and Physicians
Guide with their office so they can review it
before your appointment.
You're now ready to take the course, complete
and pass the quiz, and fill out and submit the
online form at the end of the course with your
FAA pilot information and the physician's
information from the completed CMEC. AOPA
will securely submit your completed course
information to the FAA on your behalf. Don't
forget to download and print your course
completion certificate. You'll need to keep it
and the CMEC form with your logbook or in
electronic format (and make them available to
the FAA upon request).
Note, if you haven't held an FAA-issued medical
before (for example, a student pilot or sport
pilot who's never held a medical), you will need
to have a medical exam by an aviation medical
examiner and obtain a one-time FAA-issued
medical certificate before being eligible to fly
under BasicMed.
