CFI-to-CFI Newsletter - Volume 12 Issue 2 - 7

24-MONTH RENEWAL
No need to see your physician at this time unless
your CMEC is dated more than 48 months ago.*
If you haven't had any changes in your health,
all you need is to again complete the BasicMed
online course, complete and pass the quiz, and
fill out and submit the online form at the end of
the course with your FAA pilot information and
the physician's information from the previously
completed CMEC. AOPA will securely submit
your completed course information to the FAA
on your behalf. Again, don't forget to download
and print your course completion certificate to
keep it and the CMEC form with your logbook or
in electronic format.
*Note, if your CMEC is dated more than 48
months ago, you'll need to download a new
CMEC form and visit your physician for a
BasicMed exam before you take the course again.
Remember to complete the course within 24
calendar months to the last day of the month
after your last course completion.
48-MONTH RENEWAL
This is identical to the steps you initially
completed when you first began flying under
BasicMed: download the CMEC form, fill out
your portion of the form, visit your physician
with your CMEC form in hand and have your
physician conduct a BasicMed-specific exam and
fill out the physician's portion of the CMEC form.
You're now again ready to take the course,
complete and pass the quiz, and fill out and
submit the online form at the end of the
course with your FAA pilot information and
the physician's information from the newly
completed CMEC. AOPA will securely submit
your completed course information to the FAA
on your behalf. Remember to download and
print your course completion certificate to keep
it and the CMEC form with your logbook or in
electronic format.
SPECIAL ISSUANCE REQUIRED
If you've had a recent change in health or a
medical event and have not previously had an
FAA special issuance authorization for that
condition, you may need authorization for
special issuance of your medical certificate for
that specific event or condition before you can
qualify to fly under BasicMed. Please review the
FAA website for full details on conditions that
require special issuance.
In addition, if a health or legal event has caused
a suspension, revocation, or cancellation of
your driver's license you are not eligible for
BasicMed until you possess a current and valid
U.S. driver's license.
Find more details in our BasicMed Special
Issuance Required Summary. It provides
insight into how to confirm that your condition
will require a special issuance, how to apply,
what to do and what not to do, and what happens
after you receive authorization for special
issuance of your medical certificate.
Before you act on anything, I'd highly
recommend you contact AOPA's Pilot
Information Center at (800)872-2672 or email
medicalassist@aopa.org. Please identify
yourself as someone looking for assistance with
special issuances requirements for BasicMed.
COMMON DISQUALIFICATIONS
If you currently do not qualify to fly under
BasicMed, please don't be discouraged, as many
issues can be resolved. Here are some examples
