CFI TIPS
When the pieces are put together, the data may show that certain
procedures-such as a left pattern at night near rising terrain-should be
avoided. In fact, nighttime operations and the length of the runway are two
additional layers of complexity that should not be taken lightly. If new to
this type of flying, a daytime flight at an airport with runways that are at
least the length your student usually operates from is good practice.
As you transition to the en route phase of flight, clearly the altitude of
your flight is affected by terrain. But what about the weather? Is it better
to alter your flight path to avoid turbulence and up/down drafts? Your
students should be able to identify the maximum elevation within each
quadrant along their flight by looking at the sectional chart. And they may
choose to alter the flight path to avoid flying over the tallest mountains,
when a slight deviation will provide more terrain clearance. By doing
just that on a recent flight-paralleling the magenta line indicating the
direct route from one mountain airport to another-I avoided flying
over the highest terrain in the area, achieved lateral clearance to avoid
unnecessary bumps, and did not add much time to the flight. There
were also more emergency landing options than what would have been
available directly over the highest terrain.
As your students plan their flight, have them identify terrain near your
destination airport and discuss how it will impact arrival procedures
such as traffic pattern operations. It's much better to have a plan before
you leave the ground than have to sort through the information en route.
If the runway is 10-28 and there's terrain to the south, likely there will be

right traffic for 28 and left traffic for 10 to keep the patterns to the north of
the runway. Understanding the reasons why some patterns, arrivals, and
departures are nonstandard will help your students to understand the big
picture and plan accordingly.
For additional information about this topic, the Air Safety Institute offers
an online Mountain Flying Safety Spotlight. It's an excellent overview for
your students.
Once the planning and preparation is complete, you and your student are
ready to safely fly in the mountains. And while you're up there make sure
you take the time to look around and enjoy the view. After all, isn't that the
best part?
