DPE ANSWERS FOR STUDENTS AND CFIS

ON A CFI REINSTATEMENT IS THERE A CLASSROOM TYPE ORAL TEST
SEPARATE FROM THE PRACTICAL? OR, IS THE ORAL EXAM DURING
THE PRACTICAL FLIGHT TEST WHILE FLYING?
CFI reinstatement can be accomplished in a couple of ways. A
standard reinstatement ride has specific areas of coverage laid out in
a matrix in the back of the CFI practical test standards (transition to an
ACS for the CFI has not been completed yet). The examiner will conduct
the test in accordance with that matrix and it definitely includes ground
testing that must be covered before proceeding to a flight demonstration
on the reinstatement. Another option for CFI reinstatement is to take one
of the CFI tests for which the applicant was previously certificated. For
example, if the CFI was an instrument instructor also, they could " retake "
their CFI-I practical test and if successful, it reinstates any previously
held CFI privileges. Yet another manner to reinstate an expired CFI is to
add on a new CFI credential. A CFI-I who let it expire might choose to add
MEI privileges as a way to add new credentials as well as reinstatement of
previously held credentials. In these last two cases, the test is conducted
as if it were an initial certification and will include both ground and flight
portions of the test as set forth in the PTS.

DO YOU REVIEW LOGBOOK ANNOTATIONS? FOR EXAMPLE, I'VE
RANKED MY LANDINGS IN MY NOTES AND SOME OF THEM WERE
NOT GOOD LANDINGS (THINK TIGGER THE TIGER). DO THOSE COLOR
THEIR ASSESSMENT?
The best answer here is that I always recommend a logbook be
considered a professional document. Log things professionally. But
as a DPE, I wouldn't necessarily look at any other notations negatively. The
logbook is your record of flight experience and all we need to be able to see
is that proper experience requirements have been met for the particular
certificate or rating for which a test is being given. To be honest, I probably
wouldn't even notice extra notes or notations. Now, I can't say that the same
would hold true in an interview for a job during which a logbook review was
being conducted.
