TWO VS ONE
Is a Two-Pilot Crew Safer
than Single-Pilot Operations?

THE QUICK AND OFTEN RESOUNDING
ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION IS YES! Any
worthwhile lecture about Single-Pilot Resource
Management will emphasize the unique
challenges of single-pilot flying. Specifically,
the need to stay ahead of the airplane and the
additional risk management and extra vigilance
required in this type of operation. While every
pilot needs to be on their " A " game and follow this
set of guidelines when flying alone, consider that
two-pilot crew operations bring about their own
unique challenges. A two-pilot operation does
not always guarantee a safer flight.
While the redundancy offered with two
sets of eyes scanning and sharing workload,
another entirely separate set of skills needs
to be present to successfully create a safe
environment. Communication is key! This is
a simple sentence but not a simple concept.
Effective communication generally comes after
knowing someone well and understanding
each other's habits and approaches in handling
difficult situations. However, in aviation we
often find ourselves flying with either different
flight-crewmembers or different student/
flight instructor combinations throughout our
careers. Flows and checklists help pilots create
standardization in the flight deck. But plenty of
opportunities exist that require quick decision
making, cooperation, and combined completion
of tasks. Effectively communicating with one
another is a necessity to the safety of flight.
As PIC, if you cannot effectively explain what
you need accomplished in a clear concise way
it is going to lead to confusion and mistakes. If
you, as SIC, cannot understand what the PIC
needs you to do in a timely manner it will lead
to a breakdown in completion of tasks. Flying
as SIC also requires a skill of diplomacy. You
must either comply with the captain's orders
or tactfully suggest a different plan if you do
not agree. The ability to delicately point out a
captain's error or misjudgment in a way that does
not offend or create a difficult work environment
is an important skill. We know the PIC is in
command, but the SIC cannot just go along for
the ride. At the same time, it is important to be
respectful and knowledgeable to be a valued
flight-crewmember. Learning and honing the
skills needed to effectively communicate and
work together aid pilots in creating a safer work
environment. Flying single-pilot is starting to
sound better and better, isn't it?
