LETTERS: NONTOWERED AIRPORT OPS-SAFETY AND GOOD MANNERS
When we published this Point of View article in the
previous newsletter, we asked readers to share their
thoughts on the subject and their experience with traffic
pattern encounters, whether good or bad. Here are several
opinions and experiences. Enjoy!

Nice write-up about traffic patterns at uncontrolled fields.
I would like to see an expanded point also listed in AC
90-66B which is radio calls in general. Lately we have
seen a substantial increase in radio calls being made with
just aircraft color. I have been in situations when four
white Cirruses have been in the pattern or approaching
the pattern from miles out while headed into the same
airport. We can't see aircraft color nor tail numbers from
a distance, but using tail numbers gives us a reference
that we can keep track of who is where and allows one to
communicate with a specific aircraft if there is a potential
conflict. If we address aircraft color, four pilots would all
answer in the example. How many white Cirruses and
how many Yellow Cubs are there?

See-and-avoid. I highly recommend radio communications,
but they are not required at uncontrolled fields. Watch out
for J-3's, etc., that do not have radios and make room for
them in the pattern. It's not that hard. Also, people step on
each other's calls at times, or they just miss a call.
Good manners. If there is traffic on a straight in approach
and there would be conflict if you turn in front of them,
then extend your downwind and let them in. If you are
arriving at an uncontrolled field in a light GA aircraft (e.g.,
C172, PA-28) and there is traffic in the pattern, simply do
the recommended 45-degree entry.
For larger and faster aircraft, it might be worth
considering that a straight in approach could be the best
option; trying to fly a pattern in a Lear Jet with a couple of
C150s could be challenging.
NEVER start an argument in the pattern between two
aircraft. First, everyone must fly their airplane; second,
control your emotions; and third, talk later on the ground
if you must.
