WHERE AM I?

I learned to fly at a non-towered airport, so we
self-announced our position and intentions-
on the airport surface and in the air-on the
common traffic advisory. This worked well
as most of us flew radio-equipped aircraft-
although there were exceptions-and all
(hopefully) had learned how to make the right
radio calls. Also, the runway and taxiway layout
at our airport was quite simple, so taxiing to and
from the tiedown to the runway and vice versa
was mostly non-eventful.
There's an advantage at a non-towered airport.
You don't have to wait for a clearance to depart,
land, or cross a runway. But that makes it even
more important before departure to look out
the window for other traffic on downwind, base,
and final. When approaching the airport, you
need to look for traffic already in the pattern
turning crosswind, downwind, base, and final.
And on final look for aircraft that may not have
seen you and suddenly line up on the runway
for departure. In a way, pilots at non-towered
airports may be more alert about the variables
that they might encounter with other aircraft
and pilots who are not local and may approach
the wrong runway or enter the airport traffic
pattern in a non-standard way.
After I got my private pilot certificate, I flew into
some local towered airports without problems,
but it wasn't until flying in busy airspace to land
at a towered airport with a complex layout that
I realized how ill-prepared I was for that event.
Sure, I had studied the airport diagram, looked
for runway and taxiway hotspots, and mentally
prepared for the runway that ATC would likely
assign-I felt pretty snug.
That's where the problem started-feeling snug
before I took off, not thinking ahead of possible
variations I might encounter. Navigating busy
New York airspace, dealing with rapid ATC
instructions, and trying to find the correct
airport all at the same time came to haunt me
because of my less than perfect prep work. I
finally spotted the airport nicely but lined up for
the wrong runway. Thankfully the tower forgave
me, and I landed without problems. However, I
had forgotten to identify which FBO had the
100LL that I needed. So, I had to ask ground
if they could provide me with progressive taxi
instructions to the general aviation ramp and an
FBO that could fuel my airplane. That was the
smartest thing I did that day.
