Q
A
WAS IT HARD TO CHANGE YOUR MINDSET
WHEN SWITCHING FROM PTS TO ACS
DOING CHECKRIDES?
For most DPEs, scenario based testing had
been kind of the norm for a number of years,
so the ACS codified much of what they had been
transitioning to for a while already. The biggest
difference for many DPEs was actually that
they got to test " less " than they were required
to before. The way the PTS was set up before,
every section of an area of coverage needed to
be tested. The manner in which the ACS is set
up allows DPEs to " select " more freely to build
testing scenarios. The good news is that testing
this way has become less rote and in some cases
less time consuming. The bad news is that it
doesn't mean that an applicant can skip any
areas of study just because a DPE doesn't need to
cover everything, because now they can sample
and have many ways to set up their plans of
action. So, you need to be prepared for testing on
any of the areas set out in the ACS.
Q
A
COULD YOU PLEASE EXPAND ON THE
RIGHT TIME TO MAKE THE GO-AROUND
DECISION ON AN INSTRUMENT APPROACH?
For most instrument skills demonstrations
the proper time to go around is at any
point during an approach when the pilot finds
themselves outside of the standards for the
approach (think full scale deflection), upon
reaching a decision altitude (DA) when the
runway environment is not in sight, or upon
reaching the missed approach point (MAP) on a
non-precision approach, again, when the runway
environment is not in sight. A pilot might make
a case for going missed early based on personal
minimums, weather reports, or upon reading the
minimum descend altitude (MDA) even prior
to the MAP if weather conditions are less than
expected. All of these are decisions that could be
made that are more conservative. At a minimum,
a missed approach should be initiated if any of
the conditions first noted are encountered.
Q
A
IF AN APPLICANT HAS A LOT OF FLYING
HOURS, SHOULD THAT APPLICANT BE
PREPARED TO EXPLAIN ALL OF THAT ON A
PRIVATE PILOT CHECKRIDE?
There are lots of reasons an applicant may
have more than the minimum number of
hours of experience required for a private pilot
certificate. Most DPEs don't think much about it,
just that the hours meet the minimums needed
to be eligible for the certificate. If you have more
hours, don't worry about it. Many pilots have had
starts and stops in training, changed instructors,
had life get in the way of completing their
training, and have had years or even decades
go by between the start and completion of their
training. No matter how many hours you have
put in, be proud that you are at test day!
NUGGETS OF WISDOM FROM ASI'S CFIS:
* Silence from the examiner is normal and you
are under no obligation to fill the void.
* Once you are awarded your certificate it is
an invitation to continue to train, not a
reason to stop.
