* Line up and wait-informs the pilot that they
should taxi into position on the centerline of the
runway and hold for a takeoff clearance. (The
phrase " Taxi into position and hold " was revised
to " Line up and wait " in 2003.)
* Go around-when directed by ATC, the pilot is
to abandon the approach to landing, fly runway
heading, and await further instructions. When a
pilot makes that call to ATC, it indicates the pilot
is abandoning the approach to land.
* Pilot's discretion-as part of an ATC
instruction means the pilot may decide when to
begin the maneuver. For example, " Turn base
at pilot's discretion " enables a pilot to make a
short approach, a normal turn to base, or a long
downwind before turning base.
* Traffic in sight-is used by pilots to inform ATC
that they have the previously issued traffic in sight.
Obviously, do not report traffic in sight unless you
do have the traffic in sight. However, if you had the
traffic in sight and then lost sight of that traffic,
notify ATC that you lost sight of the traffic.
IF THE TOWER TELLS A PILOT TO TURN BASE
AT PILOT'S DISCRETION, THIS SIMPLY MEANS
THE PILOT CAN TURN BASE LEG WHENEVER
THEY WANT FOR A SHORT, NORMAL, OR
LONG APPROACH.
* Closed traffic-these two words are an approval
for repeating takeoffs and landings in the airport
traffic pattern, which is defined as an upwind leg,
crosswind leg, downwind leg, base leg, and final
approach.
* Say altitude-is an ATC request for the specific
altitude of your aircraft rounded to the nearest 100
feet. Do not, as more than one student pilot has
done, reply with the word " Altitude. " It is funny for a
moment, if sincere, but not appropriate.
ANY PILOT WHO DOES NOT UNDERSTAND
AN ATC INSTRUCTION SHOULD ASK FOR
CLARIFICATION.
I invite every flight and ground instructor to add to
the list, as they think of frequently misunderstood
ATC phraseology. The purpose of air traffic
control is to assist you with safe ground and flight
operations. Any pilot who does not understand an
ATC instruction should ask for clarification.
