CHECKRIdE CHECKLIST
CHECKRIDE CHECKLIST
dPE ANSWERS FOR STUdENTS ANd CFIS BY ASI STAFF
EDITOR'S NOTE:
The following is a compilation of questions from CFIs, students, and checkride applicants answered by designated pilot examiners. This forum intends to
provide a healthy and helpful discussion platform for CFIs and applicants who are preparing for their checkrides' oral and practical test portions. It may also
serve to help enhance the applicants' checkride experiences and promote continued learning. Email cfinewsletter@aopa.org to share your questions.
Q
A
HOW FAR DO YOU LET THINGS GO BEFORE TAKING OVER?
AND IS THAT AN AUTO BUST?
How quickly we step in is a matter of how imminent a problem seems.
A designated pilot examiner (DPE) is not to ever let an applicant break
a FAR, airspace, hopefully the aircraft, or the people on it. If we have to
step in immediately to avoid that, we will. We will then " have a chat " with
the applicant and likely issue a disapproval as this is an indication of the
failure of the applicant to perceive, understand, and/or avoid a potentially
dangerous condition. It demonstrates a lack of skill or risk management
abilities required by the ACS/PTS.
In rare cases have I stepped in and the applicant has still passed. This
happens when it is something outside the applicant's control. I remember
vividly telling an applicant " my controls " forcefully and quickly as he was
flying a simulated single-engine instrument approach in a multiengine
aircraft when a very large turkey buzzard appeared on the right side of the
aircraft (the side I was on), out of the applicant's view. This required a quick
shift left to avoid impact.
Q
A
DO YOU GIVE APPLICANTS A VERBAL CUE TO AVOID AN
UNDESIRABLE SITUATION FROM DEVELOPING?
Well, this kind of depends on what is happening. Most DPEs will give
some kind of a cue in the form of a question when a situation develops.
" Gee, I wonder what that big lake off our right is? " This might be a subtle cue
to check your chart and make sure you know where you are, because it is the
last big landmark you are going to pass before flying into controlled airspace
with whose controller you are not communicating.
Nugget of Wisdom from ASI's CFIs
* Get a good night's rest-don't stay up studying or cramming
for the checkride; relax.
* Eat normally-don't try to get through a checkride on a
limited amount of food; it will impair your performance.
