and I smoothly reduced power to begin the transition from the
descent to level flight, then to the landing attitude. Touching
down with a " thump " -instead of the expected " thump, pause,
thump " of a good crosswind landing-it happened: a slight skid
like we hit an oil spot. We then straightened out and rolled off
to the left exit to go back to the hangar.
As I looked out the right window, I could see what I fervently
hoped I wouldn't-a bald spot on the tire, showing up every few
seconds as we rolled down the taxiway. How embarrassing
and how did that happen? Both my feet and my learner's feet
were not on the brakes and I wasn't carrying more speed than
I should have. So, why did we skid like that? After discussing
the situation, I came to the conclusion that I had unknowingly
relaxed some of the crosswind correction and we had caught a
small gust that caused the skid.
TOUCHING DOWN WITH A " THUMP " -INSTEAD OF THE EXPECTED " THUMP,
PAUSE, THUMP " OF A GOOD CROSSWIND LANDING-IT HAPPENED: A
SLIGHT SKID LIKE WE HIT AN OIL SPOT.
" Yeah right, John, 'fess up, you misused (abused) the brakes. "
Honestly? I don't think so, but I'm willing to admit that my
technique was faulty. So that we could both learn from my
mistake, I explained to my learner what I'd done wrong. As we
climbed out of the aircraft a colleague who'd witnessed the
landing said she thought it was " smoke on " and somehow I was
pretending to be an airshow performer. Ouch, that hurt, even
said with a smile. Ruefully I took a picture and reported it to
