HELICOPTERS
Designed specifically for helicopter pilots, the profile includes
emphasis on concepts and maneuvers unique to helicopter
flight planning and discussion of an actual or simulated crosscountry
flight to help pilots improve their ability to maneuver
safely in dynamic flight environments. It also includes concepts
and maneuvers unique to helicopter flight such as the heightvelocity
diagram, low-rotor RPM recognition and recovery, and
stabilized hovering.
How do you as a CFI use the program? Simple.
Next time your student or client needs to schedule a flight
review, let them know about ASI's Focused Flight Review and
the flight profiles available to them. Together, you can use this
opportunity to review the options.
You should discuss your client's recent (or lack of recent) flight
experience-including hours flown, takeoffs and landings, and
instrument procedures-and if applicable, the kind of flying they
do most often, and the kind of flying they would like to pursue.
When you've agreed on the flight profile that best suits your
client's situation and needs, simply work with them to go through
the steps to complete the expectations section (which may
include preflight study) and the ground and flight portions. It will
also be helpful to remind them to download and print additional
resources applicable to the selected profile.
You may choose to add your own expertise, tasks, and
maneuvers to make the flight review unique to your client's
certification level, background, experience, proficiency, and
the type of flying they do most often. In addition, all tasks and
maneuvers should be performed to the Airman Certification
Standards for the client's certificate or rating.
If combining an instrument proficiency check (IPC) with the
Focused Flight Review's Instrument Proficiency flight profile,
you must possess an instrument rating on your flight instructor
certificate and you should develop an action plan to ensure
all IPC tasks are included. Keep in mind that each requires a
separate logbook endorsement.
You should be fully qualified in each aircraft make/model in
which you provide instruction. If you are not proficient in the
aircraft being used for the flight review, be honest and decline
the opportunity while helping your client find an instructor who
is better qualified.
In the end, this program is designed to help your clients reach
their full potential and be proficient and safe.
Note, the program meets the flight review requirements of
FAR 61.56(a).
