Chief’s Corner

We asked this question at this fall’s AOPA Flight School Summit in Palm Springs, California, and received great feedback—as simple as setting proper expectations: Follow a syllabus, provide a thorough postflight briefing, and brief the student on what will be covered next. One particularly effective debrief method that provides the instructor great insight into the student’s thought process—while setting the tone—is to ask the student how they think they performed. Did they fly a maneuver completely within standards and still think it wasn’t “perfect”? Or, did they think that they had a perfect landing, but in reality they touched down more than halfway down the runway?

It’s then the job of the instructor to give the student an objective look at the day’s performance. Start with what the student did well (a positive), then list things the student could work to improve upon, and end with a positive, motivating statement giving them a preview of the next lesson. What about the student’s ability to retain debrief comments? Likely, they’re mentally drained after the flight and anxious to get onto the next thing. Who’s to say that debriefing should be limited to a face-to-face discussion after the flight? Several flight training providers shared ideas about how to improve the process. One idea: Follow up via email reiterating the points previously discussed. Another was to send students text messages with short quiz-like questions or links to aviation education (like ASI courses and videos) to keep them engaged between lessons. Possibly my favorite recommendation was from a gentleman who gives his students a

journal at the very beginning of flight training. He asks them to write down their thoughts and feelings about the experience after every flight. He was clear that he wouldn’t ever read the journal; it is for the student alone to use. After a particularly bad day, they can look back and see their progress from day one and the overall trend shows their knowledge and skills are improving. The journal is also a priceless memento of their flight training experience—forever. He found students often come into a pre-brief with questions, journal in hand, as they relived the last flight through the journaling process. What’s your method?
