thAt purported to hAve A high rAte of
SucceSS, with their StudentS grAduAting well Above AverAge.
Most who attended this particular school intended
to become an instructor. The value of a professional
instructor when undergoing flight training, let alone
instrument training, is paramount to attaining competency. The particular instructor I was introduced to
was supposed to be the best, so I chose him to instruct
me in the fine art of instrument flying.
The first lesson with him went as follows…“Hi, my
name is Sam. The airplane we will be flying today is
that yellow 152, third on the second line. Why don’t
you preflight it and I’ll meet you out there.” So being a
good little soldier I dutifully marched out to the flight
line for my first lesson. I was wondering
what we were going to do during the flight.
No preflight briefing? I was confused,
but thought, “OK, maybe he will brief me
before we leave.” No such luck—waiting at
the airplane I looked up to see Sam walking
toward me with a Coke and a hamburger
in his hands. A large view-restricting hood
was swinging from his free pinky finger.
Consuming the hamburger he climbed in
the little yellow airplane and said, “Let’s
go out to the practice area for some air
work, after that we’ll shoot a couple of approaches.” I didn’t have a clue about flying
approaches. And where was the school’s
practice area anyhow? So much for a first
instrument training flight: He wasn’t my
instructor for long.
Later in my career I was able to work as a
Chief Flight Instructor for a flight school
that took the professional look to the
extreme. The school was located in a big
fancy building. When a student entered
the door they were greeted and escorted to
wherever they needed to go. The attention
made the student seem special, I guess.
Everyone had to wear a uniform consisting of blue slacks, a white shirt, and a
burgundy tie. If you were in management
the white shirt had epaulets according to
“rank.” Not too bad, but the clothes don’t
necessarily make the flight instructor. Several instructors were not of the first-class
quality expected. They spent a lot of hardearned cash on slacks, shirts, and ties only
to be asked to leave that fine establishment. Oh well, so much for appearances.
