While flipping the classroom has redefined the role of the
student in the learning process, it’s not clear in today’s
academia the impact it has on the teacher—or in our case,
the instructor. In fact, there’s a common misconception
that flipping the classroom gives students more control
of the content and benefits them only, while reducing
the teachers' role to mere facilitators as they are virtually
removed from the learning process. While the former may
be true to a certain extent, the latter isn’t.
Traditionally speaking, teachers may spend the majority
of their profession giving classroom instruction while
secondarily tutoring, coaching, and mentoring students;

in the flipped classroom, the latter are used as primary
teaching methods. This certainly benefits students in the
learning process, but we shouldn’t overlook the fact that
teachers and instructors are gaining new ground as well.
How? Instead of offering a one-style-fits-all approach
to instructing that tends to overlook individual student
needs and preferences, flipping the classroom gives us
ample opportunities to discover each student’s pace of
learning, their personalities, and areas where they’re
likely to struggle or succeed—allowing us to tailor our
instructing to each student while building stronger,
more meaningful student-teacher relationships—a synergistic approach that heightens students’ motivation to
learn while sharpening our abilities to teach.
