to have your students talk while they fly
as well. The “telling and doing” process
identified in the FAA’s Aviation Instructor’s Handbook (FAA-H-8083-9) not only
provides great feedback for the student,
but it allows the instructor better insight
into the student’s thought process. More
often, execution problems are cognitive in
nature. If students talk during maneuvers,
you may be able to pick up on problems
faster and correct them.

Although we may spend many hours in
the cockpit, our proficiency in a specific
maneuver may be limited. If your last
chandelle was several months ago, the first
demonstration may be a little ragged. Even
if you are very proficient, try to remember
the last time you flew a perfect flight, much
less a perfect maneuver. We all generate errors when we fly but we hope to keep them
very small and eliminate them with timely
corrections. Face it: Your demo will have
some errors embedded—how you deal with
those errors is of greater importance than
striving for perfection.

intentional errors to see whether a student
understands the cause and effect relationships involved—error analysis training is
an important part of initial CFI certification. At any rate, if you make a mistake,
admit it and then describe your corrective
actions. If you make a very large error, it is
probably better to break off the maneuver
and start over—you don’t want to show a
student a poorly flown maneuver.
Fifth, stay proficient. Flight instructors frequently find themselves pushing
their own landing currency or instrument
recency limits. Don’t forget to practice
