teaching. Proficiency rides are golden opportunities to practice and refresh your
skills. If you are weak on lazy 8’s or steep
spirals, target those maneuvers and train
to improve your own weaknesses. We all
have weaknesses we may be reluctant to
share, but don’t just practice the things you
are already good at. If you are flying with
a buddy instructor, ask to see a demo and
always try to learn something. After a flight
with a fellow pilot or instructor, ask for
feedback! Do not expect any constructive
criticism unless you ask. Pride can prevent
you from receiving hints that make you a

better pilot. Remember, the goal is to improve! Make sure you provide a reasonable
number of maneuver demonstrations so
that the learning process continues. Many
instructors are reluctant to fly the airplane
enough in attempts to keep the student’s
costs down. Please understand that providing good demonstrations will accelerate
progress and reduce costs. Do not believe
that a single demo is going to be enough,
no matter how good it was!
To summarize, hit the books ahead of time
and know the numbers and the recommended techniques. Talk while you fly to take

advantage of the “telling and doing” method of instruction outlined in the AIH. Likewise, expect that perfect
maneuvers are unlikely, but understand that recognizing mistakes and describing corrective actions is of
value to your student. Finally, stay proficient so that a
reasonable demonstration is never in question. Remember, students need to see you perform these maneuvers
initially and as required thereafter. Follow the tips and
you should be able to provide very effective maneuver
demonstrations to your aspiring aviators.
