performance reinforced my sense of the absurd.
He was flawless: He took off cleanly, climbed
on the numbers, held precise altitude, and
performed the required maneuvers flawlessly.
All that remained was to return to the airport
for the formality of three landings before I
would sign him off.
His approach to the runway was immaculate:
stabilized, on the runway center line, and flying
the exact speeds for the various flap settings.
But as the descent continued past my usual
round-out point, I realized that our lovely stable
descent was only going to be arrested by a violent
impact with the runway. At the last possible
instant I intervened to fix the situation. I was
thoroughly spooked...and so was he. Apparently
landing big jets out of stabilized approaches had

somehow interfered with landing the 172. It
ultimately required some ten landings before I
finally signed him off.
This was not an isolated experience. During
a flight review with an elderly pilot flying the
Piper Arrow in which he had 1,200 hours,
conditions were somewhat gusty with a stiff
left crosswind, but well within my limits, and
surely within those of an experienced pilot
flying his own airplane.
He began the takeoff roll without putting in
the necessary crosswind correction, but as we
gained speed it became apparent to him that a
correction was needed to maintain the runway
center line, and he fully deflected the ailerons...
the wrong way. I instantly rolled the yoke back

to the left and salvaged the takeoff before we
had departed the runway. When questioned,
the pilot did not know why he had input the
wrong control. My naïve assumption about the
capabilities of a more experienced pilot had
nearly led to disaster.
With a student pilot I would have been hypervigilant; however I relaxed that vigilance in the
face of these pilots' superior credentials. It is a
mistake I won't make again, and one that has
led me to slightly revise the CFI's motto to read,
"Remember, they really are all out to kill you."
Make no assumptions.
Pete Lehmann is a derelict aviator. He flies
airplanes, sailplanes, and, mainly, hang gliders.
He possesses CFII, MEI, and CFIG ratings and
enjoys teaching.
