The number of accidents during transition
training raises doubts about whether all the
instructors involved knew those aircraft well
enough to teach them. In some cases, it's clear that
they did not. The CFI who put a 180-horsepower
Piper Arrow into the Mohawk River attempting
a soft-field takeoff had a grand total of two hours
in type, one-fortieth as much as his student. The
instructor who allowed an RV-6A's new owner
to spin it into the ground doing touch-and-goes
claimed 16,000 hours total, 25 in the same make
and model. That should have been enough-but
the record doesn't show how recently he'd flown

The frequency of accidents during recurrent
training raises other questions. These, after
all, are flights on which at least one pilot
is supposedly familiar with the aircraft.
The situation Lehmann describes-the CFI
trusts the owner to know the aircraft, while
the owner trusts the instructor to keep
them out of trouble-can lead both into
situations neither would risk alone. Data
downloaded from the panel of an SR22 that
crashed during a flight review in Oklahoma,
for example, showed that what began as a

second later the left wing stalled and a stab of right
rudder triggered a snap roll to the right. At 223 feet

At least with student pilots you know what they
don't know. With experienced pilots, all bets are
off-especially pilots you've never flown with before.
Don't get too comfortable.
