ANd AErONAuTICAl dECISION MAkINg (AdM)?
Although designed with airline pilots in
mind, general aviation flight instructors can
teach in a manner that replicates the airlines'
successful maneuver-based/LOFT-style
training. When your student begins to get
the feel of the airplane and is progressing
well with basic maneuvering, introduce the
concepts of SRM.
The first step to teaching good SRM skills
is to make your students aware of a single
pilot's available resources on board the
aircraft and from outside sources before and
during flight. Likely, your students don't
have the benefit of dispatchers, but they
do have weather briefers, computer-based
flight planners, maintenance personnel, air
traffic controllers, Flight Watch/flight service
stations, airport/facility directories, pilot's
operating handbooks, FARs...and YOU-the
flight instructor. All of these resources may
be referenced or called upon to assist when
making decisions about the flight.
The best way to teach SRM is by using
these resources and including them in your
own decision making process. Show your
students that you have checked the weather
and notams before the flight, and that you
know what challenges to expect based on the
information. Explain to them which runway
you expect to use, if you expect a crosswind,
and if you anticipate a smooth or bumpy
flight. If weather is questionable, let them
know your backup plan and at what point you
take full fuel to be under max takeoff weight. Ask
what distance they could legally fly on fuel reserves.
Throw some marginal weather into the mix-now
what distance would be smart? Ask them what kind
of backup plan they'd have if the weather deteriorates
faster than forecast. What would they have to consider
if the takeoff was at an airport with a high field
elevation or on a hot day? What would they plan to do?
These mental exercises are just as important for
students to practice as maneuvers in the aircraft and
may ultimately save lives. And don't reserve these
exercises just for primary students. When doing a
flight review, you may well be the only instructor the
pilot sees in a two-year period. Make it count!
