an instructor? How are you preparing yourself
and your students for the in-flight emergency,
whether dual or solo?
As you earned your certificates, you were
undoubtedly on top of the systems and POH
of the aircraft you were flying-how about
now? Could you pass the FAA practical flight
test in every airplane you step into? You may
fly many makes and models-some that you
might have logged many hours in-but how
do you approach a flight review in someone's
personal aircraft in which you have zero time
in type? Are you truly prepared to be pilot
in command? Did you read the POH for that
aircraft beforehand and are you honestly
proficient in its systems? You may be the
instructor, but if the student is legal to be PIC

and far more qualified in the aircraft than
you are, might it not be best to iron out those
details ahead of time? And if he/she is not
qualified to be PIC, is it wise to put yourself
in that position? As the CFI and PIC, it's all
on you. An in-flight emergency is not the time
to sort out who will be making the decisions.
File a flight plan-always-and have the true
PIC file/sign it. It may be the only document
that leads searchers to your aircraft and tells
investigators (perhaps in your absence) who
was in charge.
That brings us to aircraft control: Two pilots
fighting the yoke make for a bad day. Be sure
to iron out a system for a positive exchange
of control and brief it before every flight-you
do detailed briefings, right? The "Air Force

way" is a shake to take/push to pass.
When I shake the yoke or stick and say
"My aircraft," it's my aircraft, and I want
to see your hands like you are being held
at gunpoint and hear "Your aircraft." This
works tandem or side by side, intercom
in or out. To pass the aircraft, just say
"Your aircraft" or push the rudder pedals
back and forth-the other pilot responds
by taking the controls, giving a shake,
and saying "My aircraft." Practice and
demonstrate this (or your technique) with
your student in a non-stressful situation
until you are sure it's second nature. Take
the airplane every now and then, even
if the maneuver is going well, to further
assure the student will relinquish controls
instead of argue or hesitate.
