LETTERS ASi MeSSAge: Help Me...i'M StAlling
i introduce StAllS to my students early,
and show them a full stall, but then have them
recover at the buffet. I also have them recover
from landing stalls, power-off. It helps convince
them to recover by controlling angle of attack
(AOA), not the throttle.

AS A priMAry inStructor in the Air Force
we taught stalls and recovery as a maneuver.
I found it a valuable tool for teaching aircraft
handling and stall characteristics. Much like
the vertical "S" is a valuable maneuver in
teaching instrument crosscheck, practicing
full stalls has its place. Scenario based training
with a simulated ground altitude is however
a necessary companion for teaching recovery
from approach to stall conditions and instilling
respect for this dangerous situation.

StAllS And recovery should be part of
scenario based training. The student should learn
where stalls are most likely to occur, what the
indications are, and to react by decreasing AOA.

My inStructor HAd Me practice full stalls exclusively.
Soon after getting my license, I took a friend flying. Just after
leaving ground effect, the stall warning went off. Although I
had never been trained in imminent stalls, I knew that a full
stall would develop if I did not immediately reduce the angle
of attack. The thought of ignoring the stall warning and/or
increasing the pitch attitude rightly never entered my mind.

diStinguiSH between MAneuverS, even if they are
taught during the same flight: "We're going to practice
stalls" is primarily a control(s) training issue and not the
same lesson as "We're going to practice stall recognition
and recovery." The latter includes all of the elements of stall
warning and is primarily a flight condition response training
issue. Student pilots need training in both.
