SINGLE PILOT OPERATIONS IN LIGHT AIRCRAFT CAN BE
SAFER IF YOU TEACH PILOTS THE VALUE OF THINKING
THROUGH WHAT IT'S GOING TO TAKE TO GET FROM EN
ROUTE TO TIE-DOWN.
get from en route to tie-down. A VFR arrival
briefing can do that:
"This will be a visual approach to Runway 24
with a 45-degree entry to the right downwind.
Pattern altitude is non-standard 1,600 feet; the
runway is at 330 feet. We're going to need 670
feet of runway, and we have 4,700 available.
Winds will be an issue, they're gusty and we'll
have a right crosswind. Final approach speed
will be 70 KIAS with flaps 30; I'm aiming for
the 1,000 foot mark to expedite clearing the
runway midfield at taxiway Delta. Tower is
118.3 in COM1 and Ground is 121.8 in COM2. If
we have to go around, we'll add full power, go
carb heat cold, hold 70, and bring up the flaps,
trimming as necessary. Any disagreements or
questions? Anything I missed?"

That may be more than is required if you
have a student in a Cub going into a private
grass strip. But when your students fly a more
complex aircraft into a busier airport, or when
they start flying IFR, the experience will serve
them well.
An IFR approach involves more details, of
course, but the briefing should do the same
thing: Get your head in the game. After
hours and hours of boredom en route, you
need to focus to avoid creating one of those
proverbial moments of stark terror. Planning
ahead doesn't happen automatically; you
have to teach students to think through what
they're going to do-an aerobatic pilot who
hand flies her routine in pantomime before a
performance is doing the same thing.

Single pilot IFR (SPIFR) deserves
special attention (airsafetyinstitute.
org/spifrsa). ASI's accident database
reveals that SPIFR flights suffer several
times more accidents than operations
flown with two pilots. Since most general
aviation IFR operations are flown single
pilot, exposure alone explains much of
the difference in the number of accidents.
Additionally, most two-pilot operations
are flown in larger turbine powered
aircraft, which operate in a different
environment and typically have more
extensive equipment than light GA
aircraft.
