be structured, to be sure, but the style
and tone is important, too. An interactive
arrival discussion should include:

make. A good approach briefing can help
prevent mistakes because it makes a pilot think

rehearse the arrival when the workload is low.

minds (and a crew) to:
- Establish expectations and actions for
normal and abnormal conditions

- Instrument approach procedures

- Confirm roles and responsibilities

- Unusual conditions or procedures

- Acknowledge threats and errors

- Hazards

Students need to understand that when they
are pilot in command they are responsible
for the effectiveness of the team. More
importantly, they need to understand that
crew coordination is about conversations-
not commands; about trust-not power. An

detail or emphasis
- Promote advocacy and feedback
- Ensure understanding and agreement
Rote recitation of key waypoints and
altitudes isn't an effective and productive

- Approach conditions
- Navigation equipment and use
of autopilot
- Communications

The crucial points of the discussion
should include minimum safe altitude,
terrain and man-made obstacles, weather
and runway conditions, minimums, and
missed approach procedures.
