CHECKLISTS, APPROACH PLATES, AND APPROACH BRIEFINGS
HAVE ALL CONTRIBUTED TO SAFER FLYING.

Simply teaching effective arrival briefings
is useless unless students accept their
value. A few examples of what can go
wrong without them can help us make
our point:
- An expensive accident occurred when
flight service failed to brief a Cessna
310 pilot on a notam about trenches
across the runway;
- No one was injured, but a Cessna
172 pilot accepted a landing clearance
and landed on a runway ATIS said
was closed;
- Two fatalities resulted when a pilot
mistook parking lot lights for runway
lights and began descending six miles
too early, eventually hitting a ridgeline;
- Another pilot was killed when he
collided with a hazard beacon designed

to warn about a dark hill close to the
approach end of Runway 26 in Danbury,
Connecticut;
- The NTSB reports two costly mistakes
associated with pilot-controlled
lighting-in one case there wasn't any,
in the other the lights were notamed
out of service.
Military, airline, business, and private
aviation are safer because of several
contributing factors over the years,
including cultural changes, better
equipment, better weather forecasting,
and improved ATC services. In 1950,
for example, 776 Navy aircraft crashed,
but only 18 in 2001. There were 59
airline accidents in 1950 involving 1,059
casualties, but only 35 accidents involving
801 casualties in 2001. There were 4,505

general aviation accidents in 1950 when the
accident rate was 46.6 per 100,000 flight hours.
In 2001 there were 1,727 GA accidents, and the
accident rate was down to 6.79.
Checklists, approach plates, and approach
briefings have all contributed to safer flying.
Teach your students the procedures, show them
the facts, and especially discuss the situations
that illustrate the value of having your head
in the game. Facts make you think, but stories
change values, and values determine behavior.
