that temptation is all about emotions, we can teach
our students a similar strategy to help them find a
more compelling emotional reason to behave sensibly
when tempted to behave irrationally.

right? I'm sure you do.

There are three steps to this strategy. You should
explain each step to your students and encourage
them to apply this strategy when faced with the
temptation to behave badly.

Step 2: Identify the plausible outcome of
doing the thing you're tempted to do. This
is why hazard assessment and aviation
decision-making programs are so useful.
They help you understand the hazards
and dangers associated with certain inflight behaviors. If you know where the
in-flight hazards and danger traps are,
you're in a better position to estimate
how they'll affect your flight.

Step 1: Identify something you value more than the
thing that's tempting you to behave badly.
The thing you identify must be very meaningful to
you. It can't be trivial. For instance, suppose you
considered the implications of pressing on into poor
weather, crashing your airplane, and losing your
life. Can you imagine the terrible emotional effect
this will have on your family? Can you imagine how
difficult it might be for them to survive financially

Step 3: Ask yourself if you're willing to
live with the consequences of the worst
possible outcome of your decision. When
we juxtapose the results of a temporary

gain against the potential for losing something
of great value to us, we're more likely to resist
the temptation to behave badly.
This simple strategy will help all pilots (students
and professionals) behave properly in the face
of temptation. It works because it compels us
to identify and compare the thing we value
more with the risky behavior we're tempted to
perform. It's just one more tool that increases the
chance of a long and enjoyable flying career.
