That said, forced landings following engine failures are
generally survivable. The greater risk is that efforts to reach
the landing zone can become so aggressive as to provoke an
unintended stall-just when there's little altitude or airspeed
with which to recover.

At about 4:20 a.m. on June 23, 2011, a Beech C24R Sierra-operated by the Eglin
AFB Aero Club-contacted the control tower at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida
panhandle to request closed traffic. On board were a 470-hour private pilot training
for his commercial certificate and a CFI whose nearly 17,500 hours of combined
military and civilian flight experience included 335 hours in the Sierra. Winds were
calm, and after three uneventful left-hand patterns to Runway 19, the instructor
requested a "right ninety, left two-seventy" to land on Runway 01. That was
approved with a concurrent switch to right traffic.
After the next takeoff, the instructor requested a right turn out "to climb to two
thousand feet to report a...high key for Runway 01." This was the set-up for a
360-degree power-off approach. From the high key position 2,000 feet above the
threshold, the student is expected to close the throttle and make a continuous turn
at best glide speed, arriving at the downwind key abeam the intended touchdown
point at around 1,000 to 1,200 feet agl. Gear and flaps can then be deployed as
