a baLkEd LandIng.

I expected him to go around at any moment, and
yet we continued to float. Finally, I called, "I
have the flight controls," and initiated a balked
landing. We powered up, pitched for climb, and
raised the flaps one notch to reduce drag.
But we weren't climbing. My heart began to race
when I realized there was no way we were going
to make it over the trees. I noticed a low spot in
the treetops just to the right of the runway and
pushed just a touch of right rudder to ease us
in that direction. We cleared the trees by what
couldn't have been more than a couple of feet.
To our left, on runway centerline, the tops were
still higher than we were. After landing, I was
honestly surprised to find that there were no
leaves stuck in the landing gear.

There are a number of links in this nearaccident chain: The student's decision to land
downwind and my failure to correct him; the late
call for the go-around; (as I later discovered)
the position notch that I intended to raise
the flaps to had completely worn away from
years of use, so I had inadvertently raised the
flaps by 20 degrees instead of the intended 10,
causing a sudden loss of lift; and finally, and
most important, the student's fundamental
misunderstanding of what a go-around really is
and when it should be used.
Although the student knew how to do a goaround, he'd never been in a situation that
required him to make the decision. It turns out
I had taught him that I, the instructor, would
make the decision. If I didn't call for it, then he
was to continue with the landing. It also didn't
help that I had only ever had him do a handful of
go-arounds before his first solo and none since.

Since that flight, I have changed how
I teach the go-around procedure. Now
I try to do everything based on those
Thorndike laws of learning. I still spend
time on the ground with each student
teaching them the steps, but I spend even
more time talking through situations
where a go-around would be appropriate.
In addition, I now teach students to
expect a go-around on every approach
to landing so they won't be surprised
if it happens. If they expect one they
are more likely to smoothly and safely
perform the procedure.
I encourage my students to perform a goaround any time they are uncomfortable
