with an approach rather than waiting for me to tell them. The
law of primacy is at play here: If you tell your students right off
the bat that they are the ones responsible to decide they will be
more likely to make that decision in the future.
When a student does make the decision to go around I offer
positive reinforcement. Once we are safely climbing away from
the ground, I'll assure them that it was the right decision and
even offer a high five or fist bump. This is the law of effect. If the
student has a positive experience-rather than feeling scared,
surprised, or even belittled-they won't be hesitant to perform
the procedure when they really need to.
Another method I'll use is scenario-based training. Instead of
waiting until short final and calling "go around," I'll instead
say something like, "There's a deer on the runway," which
allows students to make the decision on their own. Using this
method for teaching the go-around not only gives them handson experience using the DECIDE (Detect, Estimate, Choose,

Identify, Do, Evaluate) model for decision making, but it also
offers a real-world situation applying the law of intensity.
When the instructor says something like, "There is an airplane
on the runway," the student must quickly decide that landing
is no longer the safest course of action, and that a go-around
should be used instead.
Now that I use this new method of teaching go-arounds, my
students are performing them more than they ever have before,
and that's exactly how I want it to be. Making the decision to
go around should be practiced regularly and used liberally.
I encourage you to use this same method if you aren't already.
It just might save someone's life, including your own.
