BE AN 'A' STUDENT
Want to be a scholar at your next flight review? Show up prepared and ready to learn. The best thing any pilot can get out of a flight review is learning something new. “It enhances the value of a currency requirement,” says Dan Namowitz, a frequent contributor to the magazine and longtime flight instructor. Namowitz conducted a first flight review with a pilot who asked to sample “close to instrument” conditions. “We didn’t go IFR, but we flew above a solid overcast that had drifted over the coast,” he says. “He was very impressed with that and would never have flown in that direction on his own.” It made a big difference in how he felt about his abilities, Namowitz says. Senior Editor Dave Hirschman conducted a flight review with a Cirrus owner who knew his airplane inside and out and flew it very well. So they concentrated on the Garmin GPSMap 496 mounted in the panel, which the owner was accustomed to using for weather information but seldom used as a navigation aid. They simulated a smoke-in-the-cockpit IMC situation that required turning off the airplane’s electrical master switch and flying it under the hood, completely by reference to the 496’s “panel” page. “The pilot/owner did a great job and it was fun to introduce a new scenario that hadn’t been covered in his previous and very extensive training,” Hirschman says. And, of course, the flight review represents an ideal opportunity to scrub the rust off certain unused pilot skills. Editor at Large Tom Horne switched off the GPS and had the pilot navigate using a VOR and cross bearings. “It took him awhile to get over the GPS ‘failure’ and get back to flying—1970's style!" Horne says.

GO TOPSY-TURVEY. As with the tailwheel endorsement, aerobatic training by itself does not constitute a flight review (and there is no aerobatic signoff or endorsement). That doesn’t mean you can’t challenge yourself with a program of aerobatic flying that includes the maneuvers and ground work needed for a flight review. Here you’ll go beyond the envelope of straight-and-level flight to unleash your inner Sean Tucker or Patty Wagstaff as you learn how to execute spins, Dutch rolls, aileron rolls, loops, hammerheads, snap-rolls, and lots of other coolsounding stuff. Stick-and-rudder flying is an essential element of aerobatics, so you’ll learn better control of the aircraft, and find out how well you handle the sensations associated with higher-than-normal G-forces. And if you fall in love with aerobatic flying, you can put together your own routine and participate in competitions.
