FINAL EXAM ANSWERS
Continued from page 21 1. The correct answer is A. FAR 61.57(b) requires the takeoffs and landings to be performed in the same category, class, and type of aircraft if a type rating is required, such as for large and jet aircraft. Performing the takeoffs and landings in a Cessna Skyhawk will satisfy the requirement if you are flying a Piper Warrior, for example. 2. The correct answer is A. While the pilot knows it is dark, and knows the visual illusions associated with a night approach, the simple fact is that the approach to land should be flown identical to a daytime approach. Visual illusions may give the pilot the feeling that the approach is faster or steeper, but the approach must be flown the same. (Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Chapter 16) 3. The correct answer is A. Pilot weather reports (PIREPs) are actual observed weather conditions, reported by pilots as encountered, and can serve as a good resource for flight planning. Area forecasts and prognostic charts are both forecasts, and not actual observed weather conditions. (Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, Chapter 12) 4. The correct answer is B. As exhaustive research of accident records has shown, most midair collisions do, indeed, occur on good VFR weather days, close to airports, and at low altitudes. When analyzed, this is very logical. In poor weather, few are flying VFR. Under IFR, the ATC separation standards all but preclude midair collisions from occurring; there is no guarantee, of course, but risk is greatly reduced. 5. The correct answer is C. Again, FAR 61.57(b) states that no passengers may be carried during the period beginning one hour after sunset and ending one hour before sunrise, if the pilot has not met the night recency of experience requirements. In this case, starting at 20:17 EST, the pilot would be in violation if passengers were carried. 6. The correct answer is A. According to AIM section 8-1-6, exposure to total darkness for at least 30 minutes is required for complete dark adaptation. A moderate degree of dark adaptation can be achieved within 20 minutes under dim red cockpit lighting, however. 7. The correct answer is C. AIM section 4-3-11 is clear that this final authority rests with the pilot in command. If the pilot in command determines that safety may be compromised, he should decline the LAHSO clearance. 8. The correct answer is A. According to AIM section 4-3-20, it is expected that the pilot will exit the runway at the first available taxiway. What ATC does not expect, unless approved, is stopping or reversing course on the runway after landing.
