Flight Simulator or X-Plane can attest to both their ability to teach specific aspects of the pilot training curriculum, and at the general lack of information on how to effectively integrate the learning to that larger course. Thanks to author Bruce Williams that should no longer be a concern. Williams’ new book, Scenario-based Training with X-Plane and Microsoft Flight Simulator reads like a textbook tailormade for learning to fly on a PC-based flight training device. Serious gamers will look at this as some sort of panacea of digital learning that will enable full airplane mastery without ever touching the controls, while the rest of us will appreciate its ability to further our learning when flying just isn’t practical. In other words, at 588 pages, there is something to please everyone in here. By opening with detailed chapters about the various simulation programs, computer requirements, and even installation techniques, Williams breaks down barriers and makes simulation accessible and excuse-free. He then transitions to a full explanation of how to properly set up the programs for an optimum learning experience, including aircraft configuration, settings for various scenarios, and more. The rest of the book consists of lesson plans that could take a student from zero time to virtual private pilot. These plans are detailed and clear, and the information is intelligent and relevant. ANYONE WHO HAS ever tried to learn something from Microsoft

Gulf Coast Avionics ANR headset
IT’S CHEAP. Or as they like to say in marketing departments, it’s inexpensive. What more can you say about the new Gulf Coast Avionics active noise reduction (ANR) headset? Marketing people may think cheap has a negative connotation, in this case it’s a compliment. Simply put, Gulf Coast’s new ANR headset does the job. It’s comfortable enough to be worn for a few hours without discomfort; it has a steel frame, so it seems fairly rugged; and it has active noise reduction technology. Better yet, when the batteries die you won’t be forced to declare an emergency because even the passive reduction is more than adequate. It has a cell phone or music interface as well. We could barely squeeze the batteries into our test unit, but who cares? It’s cheap. In most cases, we would recommend buying a headset like this as a backup or for passengers.
