LIFT OPTIONS
FLAPS, SLATS, AND OTHER DEVICES
n “Give Yourself a Lift,” from the September 2012 Flight Training magazine, Chip Wright states that flaps are trailing-edge devices, while slats are leading-edge devices. While that is generally true, as a former Boeing 727 pilot, I wanted to point out that the 727, and many airliners, are equipped with both leading-edge
flaps and slats. The leading-edge flaps are known as Krueger flaps, after Werner Krüger, the inventor. Leading-edge flaps are also present on the inboard leading edge panels of the Boeing 747 (which may be incorrectly labeled in the accompanying illustration). The difference in a leading-edge flap versus a slat is in how they are deployed. Leading-edge flaps move outward and downward, thereby increasing the overall camber of the wing. Slats move outward and provide a gap to force high-pressure air over the top of the wing. But I had to do that this time! It is essential that this concept be clear to students, lest they take what is written as correct and accurate advice. Phil Scott (see “Everything I Know About Flying I Learned in the Traffic Pattern,” September Flight Training) is obviously not an instructor, or at least was not trying to instruct in this piece.
