Final Exam

Think you know your stuff? Quiz yourself
with these FAA test questions
1. Clouds, fog, or dew will always form when
A. relative humidity reaches 100 percent.
B. water vapor is present.
C. water vapor condenses.
PLUS Should a person meet PTS
before soloing? Take the poll.

Ultimately, you help your students forge
their aviation decision-making ability earlier by soloing them in the pattern when
they have the skills to do so safely. That’s
the big payoff for the traditional solo flight.
Soloing students based on their meeting
the behaviors stipulated in the practical
test standards isn’t common industry practice. Instead, most instructors use a more
practical training standard for solo flight.
This training standard is based on FAR
61.87 (solo requirements for student pilots)
rather than FAA-S-8081-14B (Private Pilot
Practical Test Standards).

and speaker. He has been a pilot since 1970 and a CFI

TECH TIP

What frequency?
Tuning in to ground control
IF AN AIRPORT has an active control
tower, it also has a ground control.
Knowing which frequency to call on
the departure is easy. Start with ground
control (or clearance delivery if one
exists) and switch to the tower when you
are at the hold-short line of the assigned
runway, ready to depart. Arriving can be
more difficult. Ideally the tower controller
will guide you. He will give a runway exit
direction, and then a directive to monitor ground control (tune the frequency
but don’t call), contact ground control, or
monitor tower. Sometimes he'll give the
frequency. Ground control frequencies
start with 121. If told to "Contact Ground
on Point-Niner," the tower controller is
asking you to tune to 121.9.

2. To minimize the side loads placed on the
landing gear during touchdown, the pilot
should keep the
A. longitudinal axis of the aircraft parallel to the
direction of its motion.
B. direction of motion of the aircraft parallel to
the runway.
C. downwind wing lowered sufficiently to eliminate the tendency for the aircraft to drift.
3. One of the main functions of flaps during
approach and landing is to
A. decrease the angle of descent without increasing the airspeed.
B. increase the angle of descent without increasing the airspeed.
C. permit a touchdown at a higher indicated
airspeed.
4. A slightly high glideslope indication for a
precision approach path indicator is
A. three white lights and one red light.
B. one white light and three red lights.
C. two white and two red lights.
5. During a night flight, you observe steady
red and green lights ahead and at the same
altitude. What is the general movement of the
other aircraft?
A. Left to right.
B. Same direction as you are travelling.
C. The other aircraft is approaching you head on.
6. Floating caused by the phenomenon of
ground effect will be most realized during an
approach to land when at
A. a higher-than-normal angle of attack.
B. less than the length of the wingspan above the
surface.
C. twice the length of the wingspan above the
surface.
7. In order to act as pilot in command of a highperformance airplane, a pilot must have
A. logged flight time in a high performance
airplane.
B. received and logged ground and flight instruction in an airplane that has more than 200
horsepower.
C. successfully completed a flight test in such an
airplane with a pilot examiner or FAA inspector.
8. To lift a typical training helicopter to a
hover, depress the (left or right) pedal; to start
the takeoff run, the cyclic should be (pushed
or pulled); and to flare after approach (add or
reduce) power.
A. Left, pulled, reduce
B. Left, pushed, add
C. Right, pushed, add
