AFTER COMPLETING MY tour of duty in
the United States Air Force as a jet fighter
mechanic in 1972, I wanted to not just
repair airplanes but pilot them—especially after I met Daniel "Chappie" James
Jr., the first black four-star general and a
Tuskegee airman. I took a few lessons and
after my honorable discharge got my private. Fast forward 35 years later and my
retirement, whenI began the process of
re-certification of my private pilot
privileges. Although rusty in my skills,
the old fire in the belly and true love of
aviation were rekindled. I was told about
Camarillo Flight Instruction at the former air force
base and began my lessons. After eight touch and
goes at 7 a.m. on Friday, February 1, 2013, I was signed
off and also received my long-awaited medical from
the FAA. I am a traveling evangelist and plan to pilot
myself to my speaking engagements.

IT CAN BE hard to remember if you’ve been cleared to

take off or land when things get busy. Help yourself by connecting a physical action with each
instruction. For example, if the tower clears
you to take off (or you call on a common traffic
advisory frequency that you are taking off ),
turn on the landing light, the transponder,
and the fuel pump, if equipped. Similarly,
do something when you’ve been cleared to
land—lower the gear, turn on the fuel pump,
or put the mixture to full rich. That way you’ll
remember your instructions and the last-minute
task items.
