campaign in May, urging pilots to
review and practice their weather
skills as flying season gets under way.

E
ven when the weather is fine and you plan to practice takeoffs and
landings, you need to find out what the weather's expected to do while
you're in the air.
If you're flying away from the vicinity of your airport, common sense
and the federal aviation regulations require you to obtain a weather briefing
that includes forecasts of the weather along
your planned route of fight.

FORECASTS FOR PILOTS. Your favorite broadcast meteorologist gives you a good, general
picture of the local and maybe even national
weather forecasts, but not the specific information you need.
You have a choice of ways to access various
forecasts that meet pilots' needs. General aviation pilots can use FAA DUATS (Direct User
Access Terminal Service) to obtain weather
briefings and file flight plans via computer.
They can also call 800 WX-BRIEF (800-9927433).
A QUICK WEATHER OVERVIEW. If you plan to
get a telephone briefing, it's a good idea to have
a couple of weather maps to help you visualize what the briefer is telling you. A good one
to use is shown in Figure 1 (p. 43). This is a
page of four maps called "Low-level Significant Weather Prognostic (Prog) Charts." You
can obtain the latest one online (www.aviation
weather.gov/progchart/low). They are issued
four times per day and are valid for 0000, 0600,
1200, and 1800 UTC.
The lower two maps in Figure 1 show the
weather right at the surface. The upper two
maps outline the main weather features that
would affect pilots above the surface up to
