FIND THYSELF

Triangulating the aircraft's current position with a VOR

TUNE

1. Reference the sectional chart to
find what you think to be the closest
VOR. Nearby is a communications
box with a frequency.
2. Tune and make that frequency
active in your navigation radio.
Identify the Morse code of the
station to make sure it's the right
one.

VORS ENABLE US to employ three main
procedures: intercepting a known course,
navigation along a course, and obtaining
current position information. The last of
these basic functions is the easiest to learn,
and arguably the most valuable. It suggests
that if you are completely lost, a single
VOR navigation radio can identify your
position and get you back on the correct
course. Given the complexity of intercepting and tracking a radial, we'll focus solely
on obtaining a current position.
The basic components of a VOR system
consist of a ground-based station, an
airplane navigation radio, and a VOR
receiver. Each station broadcasts on a frequency between 108.00 MHz and 117.95
MHz. The pilot tunes the frequency of
the desired station on the radio, and then
selects a course on the receiver.

FIND

1. Turn the omnibearing selector until the
course deviation indicator centers and the
flag indicates From.
2. This is your current position in relation
to the VOR station. It says nothing about
your heading or where you are going. If
the CDI centers at 24 degrees, as in this
example, you are on a magnetic bearing of
24 degrees from the station.
3. Draw a line from the station up through
your bearing.

REPEAT

1. Find another VOR that's ideally somewhere close to
perpendicular to your position.
2. If your aircraft has two navigation radios, tune, verify, and find
your position using it. If there's only one, simply tune the new
frequency and change the OBS to read the new radial.
3. Draw a line from this second VOR through the radial.
Where those lines intersect is your current position.

PRACTICAL TEST STANDARDS

Objective: To determine that the applicant:
1. Exhibits satisfactory knowledge of the
elements related to navigation systems
and radar services.
2. Demonstrates the ability to use an
airborne electronic navigation system.

3. Locates the airplane's position using
the navigation system.
4. Intercepts and tracks a given course,
radial, or bearing, as appropriate.

5. Recognizes and describes the indication
of station passage, if appropriate.
6. Recognizes signal loss and takes
appropriate action.
