Beyond the airlines
For many pilots, the cockpit at a major airline
represents the apex of a flying career. But
the perfect flying job is a matter of perspective. Careers within general aviation-that's
all flying except the military and scheduled
airlines-encompass everything from instructing in a Piper Cub to flying Sikorsky S-92s
from offshore oil rigs. If you love flying but the
airlines aren't for you, consider these other
exciting jobs.
CFI. Many pilots work as certificated flight
instructors to build time and gain experience
in a variety of conditions on their way to an
airline career. For those who love to teach, it's
also a career in itself-or, as in the case of 2019
AOPA Flight Training Experience Awards CFI of
the Year Mike Biewenga, a second career. Some
instructors specialize in a type of aircraft or
flying about which they're particularly passionate, such as tailwheel or aerobatics.
Corporate pilot. In contrast to airlines' set
routes, business aviation flying can take pilots
almost anywhere. Business aircraft pilots get
more autonomy and wear many hats, making
this career a demanding and rewarding option
for those who believe variety is the spice of
life.
Flying billboard. Pilots who tow banners,
fly blimps, and skywrite put specialized skills
to use to sell anything from tires to seafood
buffets.
Pipeline/power line patrol. Pilots fly at
low altitudes to check pipelines for spills and
power lines for damaged equipment and other
discrepancies.
Slinging loads. Helicopter external load
operations include carrying anything from
construction materials to Christmas trees.
And there's so much more: medevac
transport, traffic reporting, aerial application
of crops, law enforcement, and firefighting, to
