qualify for medical certification if health
has improved and enough time has
passed, however. Under certain circumstances strokes and " ministrokes " can be
reconsidered after one to two years of
recovery, and the FAA now allows pilots
to seek commercial flying opportunities
with insulin-treated diabetes.
If an applicant for medical certification has been diagnosed with attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),
previously called attention deficit disorder (ADD); been treated for associated
symptoms without a diagnosis; or is taking one of the medications used to treat it,
the FAA requires an extensive evaluation.
Any medications must be discontinued
for at least 90 days before a neuropsychological evaluation with a clinical
psychologist or neuropsychologist. If
the individual really does have ADHD as
determined by the evaluation, medical
certification is less likely.
Anyone with an established history
of substance dependence or abuse can
be denied a medical certificate. Even
a single alcohol-related motor vehicle
conviction can negatively affect a medical
certificate application, and a history of
multiple DUI/DWIs further complicates

the process. You will be asked to provide
extensive additional information about
your past and current use of alcohol.
When a medical certificate is issued,
you are responsible for monitoring your
health and temporarily grounding yourself
when you're under the weather. Something as simple as sinus congestion on the
ground can become a debilitating headache if you climb several thousand feet.
Here are the exceptions to the
medical certificate requirements. After
obtaining an initial FAA medical, most
private pilots can transition to BasicMed,
a simpler process requiring a physical
exam at least every 48 months by any
state-licensed physician. And sport
pilots with a valid driver's license can
medically self-assess that they are safe to
fly-no medical required-although the
privileges of the sport pilot certificate are
more limiting. Medicals are not required
for glider and hot air balloon pilots.
