PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS * * * * * * * * * * The best photo light is the "golden hour" right after dawn or before sunset. Use a 24-70 or 70-200 mm zoom lens, preferably with built-in image stabilization. Avoid "freezing" the propeller by using a shutter speed of 1/60 to 1/125 of a second, using your camera's shutter priority or manual mode. Jets have no propellers-choose any shutter speed desired. Use a polarizing filter to cut haze in the sky and saturate colors. Bland backgrounds are best. Oceans, lakes, clouds, and open spaces don't compete with the subject airplane for attention, but landmarks do. A clear blue sky is boring. A shiny, gleaming subject airplane doesn't look all that different in aerial photos from one that hasn't been polished. Avoid shooting through Plexiglas whenever possible.
