can be challenging to find, nestled in the trees,
and the chateau blocks its view from the west. It
is a VFR-only airport and you have to have permission
to land. Can be a tricky place to land but

Remembering an easier time
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Chicago's Merrill C. Meigs
Field (CGX) were mentioned a lot in the forum. DCA has become more difficult to
fly into since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and Meigs was destroyed
by then-Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley when he forced its closing in 2003.
" For me, it was DCA, Washington National. Back in the early 1990s, all you needed
was a Class B (or TCA) clearance to enter VFR. On one particularly nice, but breezy
spring day with the winds out of the east, I was cleared for takeoff on Runway 3,
maintain runway heading on climb out, until clear of P-56, then on course. On most
days with a normal west wind, that clearance would take me just east of P-56. On
this day, however, it was clear I would overfly the U.S. Capitol on runway heading.
With the usual constant banter on the frequency, I could not request a heading
change, so I enacted my PIC authority and adjusted the heading just enough to fly
a continuous circuitous route around the east steps of the Capitol before heading
northwest. Those days are gone, but the memories still linger. " -Craig Brown
" When I was a kid, I flew an AA5B based out of DCA. This was about 1980 or so,
prior to the Class B and TCA. Many times I flew the river approach at 1,500 feet at
75 percent power until the Key Bridge where I would throttle back and coast in. It

" Meigs Field, Chicago. Landing next to the big masts of the sail boats and having
the tall buildings was great. Walk six blocks and you were downtown. " -David Haas
" Here's another thumbs-up for Meigs Field on Chicago's lakefront. I frequently
drove the 15 minutes to PWK, where I based my Stinson 108-2, followed by a
30-minute flight to Meigs followed by a 10-minute cab ride to work. It was always
a particularly joyful commute when expressway traffic into the city was running as
