Clever solutions to aviation
problems
I have always enjoyed reading articles involving
clever solutions to problems. The article by
Mike Busch ( " Super Sleuth, " July 2024 AOPA
Pilot) about a plug for his Garmin 496 brought
back an interesting memory.

In the late '60s, I was upgrading my Mooney's
panel to make it usable for instrument training.
I needed an adequate com 2, and my choice
became a secondhand King (I can't remember
the model.) The price was right, but what I
didn't realize was that there was a missing plug
on the back of the radio box. To my chagrin-just
like Mike's-that plug was simply unattainable.

What
to do?
At that moment my A&P rating took a back
seat to my knowledge and experience in my profession.
As a dentist, it was common to cast gold
crowns to restore badly broken-down molars.
Using equipment I had available, I waxed up
and cast that plug. I used the gold from a discarded
partial denture and several old crowns. I
remember it was close to one ounce of solid gold!
It worked perfectly. I wonder where it is now....

'Here's My Number'
As it is coming up on my sixteenth wedding
anniversary, I wanted to thank you for making
meeting my husband possible.
I grew up in an aviation family, and AOPA
was a part of our life. Eventually, I married my
first husband, a pilot. During the divorce, I knew
I wanted to marry another pilot. So, to make this
possible I put a good old-fashioned AOPA sticker
on my car's rear window. My mechanic noticed it
after a while and asked if I was into aviation. I said
yes and that I was a flight test engineer in the U.S.
Air Force. He said he knew a pilot in the area and
asked if I would be interested in meeting him. At
this, I said, " Here's my number! " The pilot, Bruce
MacInnes, contacted me a few weeks later and
the rest, as they say, is history. We were married
July 19, 2008. During that time, I have received
my pilot certificate, and we have jointly owned
two airplanes. Thanks AOPA.

My Blue Notebook
I read the article about aircraft costs ( " My Blue
Notebook, " July 2024 AOPA Pilot), and I believe
this is a classic story about appetite control and
scope creep. Yes, aircraft costs can be daunting,
especially to a first-time owner unfamiliar with
all the ways you can be nickel and dimed (or Ben
Franklin-ed in our hobby). However, there are
ways to slow the bleed.
In the wind the doors on our Piper PA-32
have definitely given us a good whack. Door
stewards would be nice, but at almost $1,000
installed it's usually on the list for next year (and
then the next). I might hunt for used cowl plugs
on eBay instead of opting for a new customized
set, or I might hit the gym more frequently to
make pulling/pushing my airplane more of a
snap instead of dropping $2,300 on a tug. We
all work within different budgets and expectations,
but with a little bit of appetite control for
non-safety related items you can turn six-figure
operating costs into five figures or less.

I liked Chris Burns' article on flying twins
( " Safety in Numbers, " August 2024 AOPA
Pilot). However, I disagree with the recommendations
in his " Scenario 1: Engine failure
in takeoff but before gear retraction " for my
airplane, a Cessna 340. I train at Aircraft
Simulator Training (AST), which specializes

As the GA fl eet ages, replacement parts
are getting harder to come by

Salvage yards like BAS Parts Sales,
Dawson Aircraft Parts and Salvage, Texas
Air Salvage, Air Salvage of Dallas, and
Preferred Air Parts sometimes off er these
strut pistons in as-removed condition for
$2,500 to $3,500, but we couldn't fi nd one
in stock at any of them. We even checked
on eBay, but no joy. So, we concluded the
best bet might be to fi nd a shop capable
and approved to re-chrome the pitted
strut. As I'm writing this, we're checking
with Delta Strut in Stockton, California,
which specializes in Beechcraft landing
gear repair but sometimes will work on
Cessna and Piper struts. Fingers crossed.
Although the cost of a new replacement
nose strut piston from Textron is
ridiculous, at least it's still available. More
and more often, we're fi nding that some
repair parts are not available at any price.
We half-jokingly refer to such parts as
being made of " unobtanium. "
RECENTLY, A CLIENT with an older Cessna 182
Skylane reported that his airplane's nose
landing gear strut was leaking fl uid and
repeatedly going fl at. Inspection revealed
that the original chrome strut piston had
become badly pitted and was tearing up
the nose strut seals. The owner's shop
checked the Textron Aviation parts system
and found that they had one replacement
strut piston in stock, and clearly, they were
extremely proud of it. The price: $9,200.
That's nearly 10 percent of the fair market
value of the whole airplane. Yikes!

My yoke-mounted 696
I ran into this issue recently in connection
with the Garmin GPSMAP 696 that I've
had yoke-mounted in my Cessna 310 since
it was fi rst introduced in 2008. These days,
I also use an iPad Mini running ForeFlight
and Bluetoothed to a Stratus ADS-B
receiver that displays TIS-B traffic and
FIS-B weather. But I've been reluctant to
give up my old GPSMAP 696 because it's
the only thing in my cockpit that provides
me with SiriusXM aviation weather (which
I much prefer to FIS-B weather), as well
as SiriusXM audio that provides music
and news to the entertainment input of my
intercom system. This is important because
I get nervous picking my way through
a cold front without SiriusXM weather,
