PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Moving on Up
Finding the path to leadership in your flight department
BY CAPT. ELIZABETH CLARK
Flying on corporate aircraft requires knowledge: the "by the book"
understanding, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), operating
standards for the aircraft, knowledge of airspace, laws, customs
and immigration restrictions.
The environment fluctuates constantly, from weather developments,
changes in air traffic procedures, or the maintenance status of
the aircraft. In addition, the defined and undefined expectations

Business schools and corporate training
abounds for new leaders to get the basics,
but what about mastering the specifics
of aviation management? Is on the job
training enough?
of passengers and management influence decision making
throughout the day. These might include the myriad of what-ifs;
changes to itineraries, medical emergencies, dietary restrictions,
and the occasional big changes such as national or international
states of emergency.

This happens all while a flight-crewmember is experiencing an everchanging landscape punctuated by occasional stunning rewards by
Mother Nature. These rewards might be an amazing moonrise or
sunset over pristine waters, snow capped mountains, or the glory
of watching the advancing seasons from a perch 40,000 feet high.
It is no wonder we love it. Challenge and success, completing a job
well done, is satisfying to the soul. But, as with all things there are
costs associated with the life. One is being away from family and
home life straining against more conventional lifestyles of those we
live with.
Ball games, dance recitals, and other essential moments where
parents are required are important to employees. Our families
need us and love us enough to let us fly secure in the knowledge
that love waits for us on our return. In order to give our best to our
families, we finesse schedules, focus our time, and plan financial
security for the long run.
Aviation leadership, while often seen as the "other side of
the coin" is actually the extension of the flight operation's
effectiveness. Without good leaders there is burnout, turnover,
and in the worst cases an accident or incident putting human
life and corporate assets at unacceptable risk. The cost of failed
leadership in aviation is ultimately measured in lives less fully lived
or less authentically expressed.
