Downtime?
A saying well-known in aviation
describes flying as " hours of boredom
punctuated by moments of terror. " I
hope that's not your day-to-day reality,
but if you dedicate a career's share
of your life to flying, you'll experience
both of those emotions to some degree.
Coming across that saying in an article
recently got me thinking about those
many cockpit hours spent in transit,
mostly in multi-crew aircraft. Some of
that time was productive and some just
" was. " Your mindset when entering the
cockpit can steer which outcome you
get on any flight.

After you gain experience in an aircraft,
the ratio between the demands of
actually flying it and all the " stuff "
back on the ground that compels your
attention (flight prep, setting up job
and personal issues to stay in check
while you are out flying) tends to
shift. It can reach a point where cruise
flight becomes your time to unplug
and unwind. As with so many things,
a little of that can be fine and natural
in appropriate circumstances. But too
much of it will elevate risk on your
current flight and also squander an
opportunity to grow competencies in
yourself and others.

Don't Hit " Snooze " on Fatigue
Long Waits and Multiple Stresses are Adding to the Fatigue
Factor for Crews During the Pandemic

The year 2020 was no ordinary year. Because the COVID-19 pandemic caused a travel
standstill, some flight departments reorganized with reduced or altered operations.
With many flight crews working reduced hours, giving them more time at home, it's
easy to think that fatigue risks have disappeared.
Think again. Fatigue is still a significant threat. Recent guidance from the International
Air Transport Association (IATA, 2020) highlights some new areas of potential fatigue
risks that include:
* Reduction in staffing levels could require remaining staff to work longer and more
grueling hours.
* COVID-19 added health and safety measures that may cause a more fatiguing
working day (such as waiting for COVID-19 tests on arrival).
* COVID-19 influencing many aspects of personal life, affecting crews' general
physical and mental wellness.
