FOCUS POINT
Briefly, the project forms itemize its curriculum and the budget
forms detail how the project will spend the grant, if awarded. The
allowable expenses for both the pilot and maintenance technician
Whether participating through a business
aviation group or association, this can be a
bountiful opportunity for a Part 91 business
aircraft operation.
workforce grants include stipends to cover the additional costs of
planning and implementing the project, instructor salary to deliver
the project's curriculum, and speaker honoraria.
MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN GRANTS
Given a target audience of K-12 and beyond, the range of
maintenance technician projects that generate and increase
interest and prepare students to pursue aviation maintenance
careers is almost limitless.
Grants can fund new educational programs that teach technical
maintenance skills for a youngster new to anything mechanical or
a veteran seeking a transition to a technical career. Projects can
include purchasing the equipment needed to create new programs
or improve existing programs.
And grants can fund scholarships or apprenticeships and support
educational opportunities in economically disadvantaged areas as
well as communities underrepresented in the aviation industry.
Whether participating in a grant effort through a business aviation
group or association, or as a partner of an eligible applicant, this
can be a bountiful opportunity for a Part 91 business aircraft
operation with a maintenance department. As is often the case in
other industries, apprenticeships and/or internships often lead to
more lasting and rewarding relationships.
PILOT GRANTS
In addition to developing and delivering a curriculum and
facilitating professional development of those who will teach it,
pilot grants will fund " reasonable costs for equipment/materials
in the form of flight simulator (hardware or software), books,
eLearning materials, plane kits, classroom drones, or other items
required to provide appropriate activities in support of the
program. " Grants can also provide flight-training scholarships for
students in the aviation program if the grantee or sub-recipient
administers them.
Ultimately, it is up to grant applicants and their partners to identify
the specific components of their project that provide high school
students with " a meaningful aviation education to prepare them to
become aircraft pilots, aerospace engineers, or unmanned aircraft
system operators. "
Members of a business aviation group or an eligible applicant's
Part 91 partner might participate by providing a series of guest
speakers who share their experiences in business aviation. In one
or a series of classroom conversations, these interactions could
convey everything from the initial and recurrent pilot training
involved to the speaker's career path and what a day in the life
looks like.
Other opportunities might include hangar and aircraft tours or the
establishment of a flight training scholarship program. All should
be opportunities to develop mentoring relationships that help
the participants achieve their long-term goals. Given the grant
program's broad parameters, there is ample room for applicants to
be creative and innovative with their submissions.
-Scott Spangler fell in love with aviation at age 5, when he
found his father's WWII U.S. Navy Aircraft Identification
manuals. A pilot since 1976, he was the founding editor of
Flight Training magazine, and is currently a contributing editor
at JetWhine.com, Aviation for Women and Kitplanes.
QUIZ ANSWERS QUIZ ON PAGE 3
1. D. Both A and B are correct. Magnetometers seek the earth's
lines of magnetism and feed the data to the ADHRS units
in the aircraft EFIS system to provide heading information,
sometimes in concert with a pitot-static system.
2. A. Jet fuel's distillation process leaves it vulnerable to
absorbing water. There are additives that can help expel the
water from the jet fuel and these should be considered any
time the aircraft is expected to operate above the freezing
level.
3. C. A and B are correct. For all practical purposes, if it isn't
going to be good VFR when you arrive at your destination
and you are filing an IFR flight plan on a Part 135 flight, you
should add an alternate destination to your flight plan.
4. E. A, B, and C. Load manifests are required paperwork for
flying commercially. There's a lot involved in making sure
that flights get out safely, and it takes a team of people to
make it all happen. Make sure that you get to know your
dispatcher or whoever is responsible for filling in the load
manifest. It is the PIC's responsibility to get the numbers
correct. Remember, the dispatcher stays on the ground.
