brochures, bulletins, etc., relating to the flight. But given the
unforgiving nature of aviation, missing one critical piece of
information can have dire consequences.
Safety information and lessons learned are captured and
promoted through safety programs (SMS). But they need to be
" put to work " proactively vs. just buried in a book or manual
somewhere. If we can enable relevant safety lessons to be
brought to the attention of the crew preflight, our risk assessment
process would better serve as a risk control.
Polaris Aero's FlightRisk application on the VOCUS platform
can achieve this and address the problem of information
overload by analyzing various factors-schedule, pilot,
environmental, aircraft, and airfield-to identify information that
is most relevant to the flight. By providing context to information,
the risk assessment is made more meaningful to everyone in the
flight department from the beginning of the scheduling process
all the way up to flight time.
The knowledge or " know-how " an operator configures
into FlightRisk is key to the tool's ability to effectively improve
decision-making-and better decision-making means fewer
incidents and accidents. Whatever methods are used to collect
and store the body of operational experience an operation
accumulates over time, it's vital to have an adjoining means to
accurately sort and re-deliver specifically relevant lessons in the
most timely and seamless ways possible to support decisionmakers.
That intuitively seems vital to optimizing safety and is
foundational to everything Polaris Aero does.
